[Born] 1625? Chalon-sur-Marne [Died] November 24, 1694. French colonial administrator in Paris. First Prefect of New France (in office 1665-68, 70-72). He became a soldier at the age of 28, and after serving as prefect of several French overseas territories, he was appointed as the first Prefect of New France in 1665. King Louis XIV and his finance minister, J. Colbert, wanted the colony to be economically independent, and entrusted this important task to Talon. He actively promoted French migration to North America, and worked hard to diversify the colony's economy, which was dependent on the fur trade, and to develop industry. As a result, the population of New France increased, and the colony became economically strong enough to withstand subsequent attacks from England. After returning to France, he served as the King's private secretary, among other positions.
