U Thant

A Burmese politician, he was the third Secretary-General of the United Nations. He graduated from Rangoon University. After World War II, he was active in the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League, and after independence, he served as Director of the Information Department and Director of the Economic and Social Department. In 1957, he became Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He became Acting Secretary-General after the sudden death of Secretary-General Hammarskjöld in September 1961, and was officially appointed Secretary-General on November 30, 1962, and served two terms until the end of 1971. Although he was a more modest person than his predecessor, as a politician from a non-aligned country, he played the role of mediator in important cases such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the conflicts in the Congo and Cyprus, and the Vietnam issue.

ミャンマーの政治家で，第3代国連事務総長。ラングーン大学卒業。第2次世界大戦後〈反ファシスト人民自由連盟〉で活動し，独立後は情報局長，経済社会局長などを歴任。1957年駐米大使，国連代表となる。61年9月に急死したハマーショルド事務総長のあとをうけて，事務総長代理となり，62年11月30日に正式の事務総長に就任後，71年末まで2期務めた。前任者に比べて地味な人柄ながら，非同盟国出身の政治家としてキューバ危機，コンゴおよびキプロスの紛争，ベトナム問題など重要な案件に取り組み，調停者としての役割を果たした。
