…A Chinese painter from the Southern Song Dynasty. Dates of birth and death unknown. His pen name was Yu Yu. He was from Qiantang (Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province). He is said to have been the Taizhong of the Painting Academy during the Ningzong Dynasty (1195-1224) or the Gonghou of the Painting Academy during the Lizong Dynasty (1225-64), but he also held the unusually high position of Xunwu Lang, a position unusual for a painter in the Painting Academy. Influenced by the works of Li Tang, he excelled in ink-wash landscape painting, and together with his contemporary Ma Yuan, he brought Southern Song Court style painting to perfection. His style of painting expresses fresh poetic sentiment by layering ink strokes of various tones within the neat formal beauty of diagonal composition. …
