An old town in Motoyoshi County, northeastern Miyagi Prefecture. Although it is mostly mountainous, there are lowlands along the Pacific coast, and the main settlement, Tsuya, once flourished as a post station. The Kesennuma Line runs through the town. Silkworm farming, dairy farming, rice cultivation, and tobacco cultivation are carried out here, and abalone and sea urchins are also caught. Otani Beach is a swimming beach. 宮城県北東部,本吉郡の旧町。山地が多いが,太平洋岸に低地が開け,主集落津谷は,かつては宿駅として栄えた。気仙沼線が通じる。養蚕,酪農,米作,タバコ栽培が行われ,アワビ,ウニなども漁獲。大谷海岸は海水浴場。2009年9月気仙沼市へ編入。106.70km2。1万1588人(2005)。
