...However, the bone and the costal cartilages are connected continuously, not by joints. A few posterior (lower) ribs are free at the ventral end and do not connect to the sternum (these are called false ribs). The cervical and lumbar vertebrae appear to have no ribs, but in fact, like birds, the vestiges of ribs are fused to the vertebrae and integrated into them.
