Magnasco - Manyasco (English spelling) Alessandro Magnasco

Italian late Baroque painter. Born in Genoa. After training in the studio of his father Stefano, who was also a painter, he went to Milan to study under the Venetian painter Filippo Abbiati. He started out by painting portraits, but under the influence of Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), he gradually began to paint small figures without any sense of mass. He briefly went to Florence to become the court painter for the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He lived in Milan from 1711 to 1735, then returned to Genoa, where he remained until his death. His favorite subjects were monks, hermits, Roma (formerly known as gypsies), people who were marginalized from society, artisans working hard, and forests shaken by storms. His dynamic paintings, which make full use of free-spirited brushstrokes and color spots, contain pioneering elements of Impressionism, and the originality of his style shows a break with traditional forms.

イタリア後期バロックの画家。ジェノバ生まれ。画家であった父ステファノの工房で修業したのち、ミラノに行きベネチアの画家フィリッポ・アッビアーティに師事。当初は肖像画を手がけていたが、サルバトール・ローザSalvator Rosa（1615―73）からの影響もあり、しだいに量塊性のない小さな人物が画面に現れるようになる。一時フィレンツェに出てトスカナ大公の宮廷画家となる。1711～35年ミラノに居住し、その後はジェノバに戻って、死ぬまでそこで活動した。彼の得意とした主題は、修道僧、隠者、ロマ（かつてはジプシーとよばれた）といった社会から疎外された人間、仕事に精を出す職人、そして嵐(あらし)に激しく揺さぶられる森などである。自由奔放な筆致と色斑(しきはん)を駆使した動勢の強い画面は、印象派の先駆的要素を含んでいて、その作風の独創性には伝統的な形式の打破がみられる。
