Also known as matrix mechanics. Starting from the correspondence principle established by Bohr to relate his quantum theory to classical theory, this is a form of quantum mechanics proposed by Heisenberg in 1925 and developed by Born and Jordan. All observable physical quantities such as coordinates, momentum, and energy are expressed as matrices, and equations of motion corresponding to classical equations of motion and equations expressing quantum conditions are established between them. By applying transformations to the matrix, the energy levels of the system and the probability of transition from one level to another can be obtained as matrix elements. It is mathematically equivalent to wave mechanics, but wave mechanics is more commonly used because it is less convenient to handle.

行列力学とも。ボーアが彼の量子論と古典理論を関係づけるため立てた対応原理を出発点とし，1925年ハイゼンベルクが提唱し，ボルン，ヨルダンが展開した量子力学の一形式。座標，運動量，エネルギーなど観測できる物理量をすべて行列で表し，それらの間に古典的運動方程式に対応する運動方程式と量子条件を表す方程式を立てる。行列に変換を加えることにより，系のエネルギー準位や，ある準位から他の準位への遷移の確率が行列の要素として得られる。波動力学と数学的に同値だが，扱いが不便なので波動力学のほうが多く用いられる。
