Madrigal

Japanese:
Madrigal
In Italian, it is called madrigale. (1) A small lyric poem from the Renaissance Italy. The content is often pastoral, and it was sung as a polyphonic piece for two or three voices. (2) A type of polyphonic secular song using advanced compositional techniques developed in 16th-century Italy. It has almost no relation to (1). As dramatic expression became more important, solo cantatas with basso continuo also appeared. In the early period, many were composed by the Flemish school, such as Arcadelt, but the works of Luca Marenzio (1553 or 1554-1599), Gesualdo, Monteverdi, and others who were active from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century are well known. These Italian madrigals were introduced in large numbers in England from the 1580s onwards, and under their influence, English madrigals began to be composed. Representative composers include Byrd and Dowland.
