A former town in Higashiusuki District in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. It borders Nobeoka City to the west. The Gokase River runs roughly east-west through the southern part of the town, and National Route 218 runs along the river. Most of the town is covered by forest and wilderness, and the town produces rice, oysters, shiitake mushrooms, tea, and tobacco, and beef cattle are raised. 宮崎県北部,東臼杵(ひがしうすき)郡の旧町。延岡市の西に接する。町の南部を五ヶ瀬川がほぼ東西に流れ,川沿いに国道218号線が通じる。町域の大部分を山林原野が占め,米,カキ,シイタケ,茶,タバコを産し,肉用牛の飼育などが行われる。2006年2月東臼杵郡北浦町と延岡市へ編入。200.70km2。5093人(2003)。
