Year of death: March 12, 1780 (April 16, 1780) Year of birth: 1717 A painter of the Southern style in the mid-Edo period. He was originally named Shuseki, and used the pen names Shiwa and Matsusekisai. In 1758, he adopted the pen names Shosen, Teikou, and Koyo, and from around 1769, he adopted the pen name Teikou and the pen name Shiwa. Born into a merchant family in Kochi, originally a samurai family, he studied Confucianism early on and progressed to poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He traveled to Kyoto and Osaka, studying painting under Pengcheng Hyakusen, and in 1778, he went to Edo and studied calligraphy under Seki Shikyo. In the same year, he was promoted to the rank of samurai by the Tosa clan for his diligent study of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. After the Great Edo Fire in 1772, he traveled to Oshu and Uzen, where he painted works such as "True View of Kisakata," but his style is often characterized by rich colors and Chinese-style brushwork, as in the "Phoenix and Peacock Screen" (owned by Kochi Prefectural Cultural Center). 没年:安永9.3.12(1780.4.16) 生年:享保2(1717) 江戸中期の南画家。はじめ名は修錫,字を子和,松石斎などと号し,宝暦8(1758)年より名を象先,字を廷沖,高陽を号とし,明和6(1769)年ごろより名を廷沖,字を子和とした。もともとは武士の家柄であった高知の商家に生まれ,早くから儒学を学び,詩書画へとすすんだ。京坂に遊学して彭城百川に画を学び,宝暦8年江戸へ出て,関思恭に書を学ぶ。同11年には土佐藩より詩書画への精励をもって士分格に取りたてられている。安永1(1772)年の江戸大火を機に奥羽旅行に出て「象潟真景図」などの作品を描いたが,作風は「鳳凰孔雀図屏風」(高知県立郷土文化会館蔵)のように,濃厚な著色と漢画的な筆法のものが多い。著書に画論『画譚鶏肋』がある。 (星野鈴) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
