Art that flourished during the Kushan and Gupta periods, centered around the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. Mathura has flourished as a holy place for Hinduism since ancient times, with many temples lined up along the Jamuna River that runs through the city. Located near the Gandhara region, the first Buddhist statues in India were produced here around the 1st century.
