Art that flourished during the Kushan and Gupta periods, centered around the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. Mathura has flourished as a holy place for Hinduism since ancient times, with many temples lined up along the Jamuna River that runs through the city. Located near the Gandhara region, the first Buddhist statues in India were produced here around the 1st century. It is famous as a treasure trove of Buddhist and Jain sculptures.

インド北部，ウッタル・プラデーシュ州の都市マトゥラーを中心に，クシャーナ朝とグプタ朝時代に栄えた美術。マトゥラーは古来ヒンドゥー教の聖地として栄えた所で，市内を流れるジャムナ川沿いに多数の寺院が並ぶ。ガンダーラ地方に近く，１世紀ころインドで初めて仏像が制作された。仏教，ジャイナ教の彫刻の宝庫として名高い。
