Enkianthus campanulatus - Enkianthus campanulatus

Japanese: ドウダンツツジ - どうだんつつじ
Enkianthus campanulatus - Enkianthus campanulatus

A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It grows to 2-3 meters tall. The branches are thin and branch out into a wheel shape. The leaves are gathered in whorls at the ends of the branches, obovate, 3-4 cm long, pointed at both ends, with fine serrated edges, and brown hairs below the midvein on the underside. The leaves turn a beautiful red in autumn. In April, 2-4 small white flowers bloom in a scattered pattern facing downwards along with the new leaves. The corolla is urn-shaped, 7-8 mm long, with 5 lobes at the edge. There are 10 stamens. The capsule is narrowly oblong, about 7 mm long, and faces upwards. It grows in mountainous areas, and is distributed from Honshu west of Shizuoka Prefecture to Kyushu. The name was derived from the fact that the radial branches resemble the legs of a knotted lighthouse that was used for nighttime illumination in the past, and was later corrupted from the name "lighthouse azalea." It is widely planted as a garden tree or hedge. It tolerates pruning well and is easy to propagate by cuttings. There are more than a dozen other species in the Enkianthus genus in East Asia, including Enkianthus sarasa.
