Speedometer - speedometer

It is an instrument that measures and displays the ground speed of a moving vehicle, and is essential for ensuring safety. For wheeled vehicles, it is calculated by multiplying the number of wheel rotations per unit time by the circumference of the wheel. Usually, the distance traveled per hour (speed per hour) is used, and miles are also used in the United States and the United Kingdom, but kilometers are the standard worldwide.

In automobiles, the speedometer is driven by rotation from the output shaft of the transmission or the propeller shaft. Generally, the rotation is guided into the meter by a flexible shaft, and the needle is operated by electromagnetic induction or the centrifugal force of a rotating weight, but recently there are many that are operated by electrical pulses. The most common type is one where the needle rotates, but there are also types where the needle is fixed and the dial (or cylinder) rotates. Recently, digital displays using color LCDs and graphic displays are becoming more common. In the future, so-called head-up displays, which allow digital displays to be seen several meters in front of the windshield, eliminating the need to look down each time, are expected to become common.

In addition, Japan's "Safety Standards for Road Transport Vehicles" (1951 Ministry of Transport Ordinance) requires that vehicles with a maximum speed of over 20 kilometers per hour must be equipped with a speedometer in a location that is easily visible to the driver, and that the error in the speedometer must be less than plus 15% or minus 10% when traveling at 35 kilometers per hour or more on a flat, paved road, and that the deflection of the indicator needle must be within plus or minus 3 kilometers per hour.

走行する交通機関の対地速度を測定、表示する計器で、安全性確保のために必要不可欠である。車輪で走行するものでは、単位時間内の車輪の回転数と、車輪の外周寸法を掛けることによって求められる。通常は1時間の走行距離（時速）を用い、アメリカやイギリスではマイルも使われているが、世界的にはキロメートルに統一されている。

　自動車の場合は変速機の出力軸ないしプロペラシャフトから回転を取り出して速度計を駆動している。一般的にはフレキシブル・シャフト（可撓(かとう)軸）で回転をメーター内に導き、電磁誘導または回転するおもりの遠心力で針を作動させる方式であるが、最近では電気パルスで作動させるものも少なくない。針が回転する方式が一般的であるが、針が固定されて目盛盤（または円筒）が回転する方式もある。最近ではカラー液晶によるデジタル表示や、グラフィック・ディスプレーが普及しつつある。将来はデジタル表示がウィンドシールド（前窓）の前方数メートルの所に見え、いちいち視線を下に落とさなくてもすむ、いわゆるヘッドアップ・ディスプレーが一般化するものとみられる。

　なお日本の「道路運送車両の保安基準」（昭和26年運輸省令）では、最高速度20キロメートル／毎時を超える自動車は速度計を運転者の見やすい箇所に備え、その誤差は35キロメートル／毎時以上で平坦(へいたん)な舗装路を走ったとき、正15％、負10％以下であること、指示針の振れは同正負3キロメートル／毎時以内であること、と要求している。
