Japanese: 歌津魚竜 - うたつぎょりゅう（英語表記）Utatsusaurus hataii

A reptile discovered in 1970 in an Early Triassic black shale layer found on the coast of Tatezaki, Utatsu-cho, Motoyoshi-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. Ten individuals have been found here. It is 1.4m long and has a slender dolphin-like shape. It has an irregular tail. It has a short head with a protruding snout. It has eye rings. It has parallel, thin, cylindrical teeth. Its scapula and coracoid are fan-shaped. Its limb bones, such as the humerus, are said to be primitive. The phalanges of its forelimbs are distinctively long and slender. Its hind limbs are small. It is considered to be the most primitive ichthyosaur in the world.

1970年宮城県本吉郡歌津町館崎の海岸にみられる三畳紀初期の黒色ケツ岩層より発見された爬虫類。ここからは10個体分が産出した。全長1.4mで，細長いイルカ形をしている。尾は不等形。頭は短く，吻部（ふんぶ）が突出している。眼輪をもつ。細い円筒形の歯が並列する。肩甲骨と烏口骨は扇形。上腕骨など四肢骨は原始的といわれる。前肢の指骨は細長いのが特徴。後肢は小さい。世界でもっとも原始的な魚竜と考えられている。
