Goethe's full-length novel. It consists of Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (The Apprenticeship) in eight volumes (1796) and Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre (The Wanderings) in three volumes (1829), but the two are significantly different in content and structure. The title incorporates the name of the traditional German apprenticeship system for craftsmen, and alludes to a connection with the secret society of Freemasonry. Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre is divided into two halves, centered around the sixth volume, Confessions of a Beautiful Soul, and depicts the positive and negative possibilities of human development not only for the protagonist Wilhelm but also for various men and women.
