A former town in Shiso County, western Hyogo Prefecture. Occupying the Hikihara River basin upstream of the Ibo River, it has many beautiful forests of beech and cedar, and produces a lot of timber, chestnuts, and shiitake mushrooms. It has Tokura Pass and is passed through by the Inaba Highway (National Route 29). The valley of the Hikihara River is famous for its autumn leaves. Hikihara Dam supplies industrial water to the Harima Industrial Region. In April 2005, it merged with Yamazaki Town, Ichinomiya Town, and Chikusa Town in Shiso County to become a city, Shiso City. 161.30 km2 . 4,940 people (2003).
