Matsuura Shigenobu

Japanese: 松浦鎮信 - まつらしげのぶ
Matsuura Shigenobu

A military commander from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period. Son of Takanobu. Lord of Hirado Domain, Hizen (Nagasaki Prefecture). In 1587 (Tensho 15), he accompanied his father Takanobu when Toyotomi Hideyoshi dispatched forces to Kyushu, and served under Konishi Yukinaga during the Bunroku and Keicho Wars, achieving success. The Matsuura clan of Hirado used this war as an opportunity to strengthen and control their vassals, and grew into a modern daimyo. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he did not respond to the urging of Ishida Mitsunari and others, but instead joined the eastern army, which allowed him to retain his main territory, and he held a total of more than 63,000 koku of land, including Matsuura and Higashisonogi counties, as well as Iki. In 1609 (Keicho 14), he succeeded in attracting Dutch ships to Hirado, and the British and Dutch established trading posts in the area one after another, bringing trade to Hirado at its peak. In 1589, he shaved his head and took the name Munenobu (Muneshige), and advanced to the rank of Hoin and was ranked as the Minister of Ceremonies.
