Uesugi Shigefusa

Date of birth and death unknown. Military commander in the mid-Kamakura period. Founder of the Uesugi clan. Son of Fujiwara no Kiyofusa. Appointed as Shikikenmon Inkurodo, Shuri Daifu, and Saemon no Kami. In 1252 (4th year of Kencho), he went down to Kamakura with Prince Munetaka and served as a close attendant to the Shogun. At this time, he was given Uesugi Sho in Ikaruga County, Tanba Province (Uesugi, Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture), and began to call himself the Uesugi clan. Shigefusa's daughter married Ashikaga Yoriuji, and Shigefusa's son Yorishige's daughter (Kiyoko) married Ashikaga Sadauji, and gave birth to Takauji and Tadayoshi. The Uesugi clan formed close marital ties with the Ashikaga clan, and thereafter played an important role as the Ashikaga clan's in-laws.

生没年不詳。鎌倉中期の武将。上杉氏の祖。藤原清房の子。式乾門院蔵人(しきけんもんいんくろうど)、修理(しゅり)大夫、左衛門督(さえもんのかみ)に任ず。1252年（建長4）宗尊(むねたか)親王とともに鎌倉に下向し、将軍の近習として仕える。このとき丹波(たんば)国何鹿(いかるが)郡上杉荘(しょう)（京都府綾部(あやべ)市上杉）を与えられ、上杉氏と称するようになる。重房の娘は足利頼氏(あしかがよりうじ)に嫁し、また重房の子頼重(よりしげ)の娘（清子）は足利貞氏(さだうじ)の妻となり、尊氏(たかうじ)、直義(ただよし)を生んだ。上杉氏は足利氏と密接な姻戚(いんせき)関係を結び、以後足利氏の外戚として重きをなした。
