A perennial grass of the grass family that grows underwater or near water in ponds and marshes (illustration). The stems are long and slender, soft, and root in the muddy soil at the bottom of the water, branching at the base, with the upper part often floating on the water's surface. The name "Ukishiba" (floating grass) comes from the way it grows, but this species is not related to turf grass, but is more closely related to Japanese turf grass. The leaves are short and linear, about 4 cm long and 3 mm wide, and whitish green, at the nodes of the stem. In midsummer, solitary green inflorescences appear at the tips of the branches and at the top of the stem. The inflorescences are cone-shaped, but because the branches stand along the axis, they appear spike-like, and are 3 to 6 cm long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
