…Fu appears under the name of “menkin” in the “Mengxi Bidan” (Dreams and the Past), written during the Song Dynasty in China, and it is thought that this was brought to Japan. Fu originally meant “bran” (bran) that is produced when making wheat flour, and in Japan it was called “karako” (shell flour). As bran was also used as a raw material for fu, “Honcho Shokan” (1697) writes that “menkin is called fu because it is made from bran.” …
