Languages derived from Latin, belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. Romance. Also known as Romance language. A general term for Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Rhaeto-Romanic, Catalan, and Provencal. After the collapse of Rome, Vulgar Latin (spoken Latin), which was widely distributed, absorbed local vernaculars and continued to develop independently, resulting in the formation of these languages. Thus, Latin and Romance languages are in a parent-child relationship, and are a typical example of comparative research of Indo-European languages.

インド・ヨーロッパ語族のイタリック語派に属するラテン語から派生した諸語。Romance。ロマン語とも。ポルトガル語，スペイン語，フランス語，イタリア語，ルーマニア語，レト・ロマン語，カタルーニャ語，プロバンス語の各語の総称。ローマの崩壊とともに広く分布していた俗ラテン語（口語ラテン語）は各地の土語を吸収しつつ独自の発展を続けた結果，これらの諸言語が形成された。したがってラテン語とロマンス語は親子の関係にあり，インド・ヨーロッパ語の比較研究の典型となった。
