An evergreen perennial plant of the Vitis family (APG classification: Apiaceae). The stems are erect or creeping, and become woody as they age. The leaves are thick, succulent, opposite, cylindrical or triangular. The leaves are fused together. Many flowers bloom in clusters from May to June. The flower diameter is about 5 cm, resembles a chrysanthemum, and has a metallic luster. The flower colors are rich, including red, peach, orange, and yellow. The leaves are arranged like pine trees, and the flower shape resembles a chrysanthemum, so it is called pine daisy, but the whole plant resembles a type of cactus, so it is also called cactus daisy. It can be propagated by seed, but is usually propagated by cuttings. The soil should be well-drained. It is best planted in a pot or flower bed, but it is cold-resistant and can survive winter in areas west of the Kanto region with simple frost protection.

ツルナ科（APG分類：ハマミズナ科）の常緑多年草。茎は直立もしくは匍匐(ほふく)性で、古くなると木質化する。葉は肥厚した多肉質で対生し、円筒または三稜(さんりょう)形。葉の接合部は合着する。花は5～6月、多数群がって開く。花径は約5センチメートル、キクに似ており、金属的な光沢がある。花色は赤、桃、橙(だいだい)、黄色などと豊富である。葉のつき方がマツに似ており、花形がキクに似るのでマツバギクの名があるが、全体をある種のサボテンに見立て、サボテンギクの名もある。繁殖は実生(みしょう)もできるが、普通は挿木による。用土は水はけのよいものにする。鉢植えまたは花壇植えにするが、耐寒性は強く、関東地方以西では簡単な霜よけで越冬できる。
