A general term for Old World monkeys belonging to the genus Colobus of the family Cercopithecidae in the order Primates. All species in the genus Colobus are native to Africa, but the term can also refer to the entire subfamily Colobinae, including those in Asia. The name Colobus comes from the Greek word kolobos, meaning "torn off," because the thumbs of the monkeys have degenerated to vestigial form. The degeneration of the thumb is not as noticeable in Asian monkeys. Colobus monkeys have thick tails that are longer than their bodies, and are relatively large and slender. 霊長目オナガザル科コロブス属Colobusに属する旧世界ザルの総称。コロブス属の種はすべてアフリカ産であるが,アジア産のものを含めたコロブス亜科全体を指す場合もある。コロブス属は手の親指が退化して痕跡化していることから,〈ちぎれた〉を意味するギリシア語のkolobosをとってこの属名がつけられた。アジア産のものは親指の退化が目だたない。コロブス属のサルは体長より長い太い尾をもち,比較的大型でほっそりしている。
