A general term for Old World monkeys belonging to the genus Colobus of the family Cercopithecidae in the order Primates. All species in the genus Colobus are native to Africa, but the term can also refer to the entire subfamily Colobinae, including those in Asia. The name Colobus comes from the Greek word kolobos, meaning "torn off," because the thumbs of the monkeys have degenerated to vestigial form. The degeneration of the thumb is not as noticeable in Asian monkeys. Colobus monkeys have thick tails that are longer than their bodies, and are relatively large and slender.
