An island in the eastern part of the Visayan Islands in the central Philippines. A mountain range runs from north to south, with the highest point being Mount Mahunag (1,349m). The coastline is very winding. The inhabitants include the Warays and Cebuanos. The land is fertile, and rice, corn, coconut palms, and sugarcane are cultivated in the lowlands. Mineral resources are abundant but undeveloped. The capital is Tacloban on the northeast coast. It is known as the site of a fierce battle between the United States and Japan at the end of World War II. It has an area of ^{7,214 km2} .
