Born: November 24, 1583. Baptized: Salisbury [Died] March 18, 1640. Burial: London. English playwright. Studied at Oxford University. At first he collaborated with J. Fletcher and others, and after Fletcher's death he was active as a central playwright for the King's Men until his death. His plays suited the tastes of the younger generation, who wanted sexual and violent excitement, and his clever plots and stagecraft made him a popular playwright for a time. He was a prolific writer, writing about 60 plays, both in collaboration and on his own, and his greatest success was the satirical comedy A New Way to Pay Old Debts (1622), which features a loan shark overreach. Other works he wrote include the tragedy The Duke of Milan (21-22), The Roman Actor (26), and the realistic comedy The City Madam (32).
