...A general term for plate-shaped materials made by rolling steel ingots. There are thick plates and thin plates. Thick plates are usually 3 mm or thicker, and their composition and temperature history during production are carefully controlled. This is because thick plates are further processed and used for natural gas and crude oil transport pipes in cold regions, and for the outer plates of ships. In other words, steel generally has a weakness that makes it prone to a phenomenon called low-temperature brittleness, and because of this, in the 1930s, there were many accidents in which ships built with welded thick plates broke and sank one after another in the cold seas, becoming a major problem.
