A district in the southeast of Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. It was a key point for land and water transport during the Edo Period. Formerly Kuragano Town. It was a post town on the Nakasendo Road, a branching post on the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido Road, and the end point of the Tone River water transport route, Kuragano Kashi (river port), was established here. The river bank was on the left bank of the Karasu River, and rice, lumber, soybeans, silk, and other items were transported to Edo by Takase boats, and salt, tea, dried sardines, and other items were transported from Edo to Gunma, Nagano, and Niigata Prefectures. Currently, it is a branching point for the JR Takasaki Line and the Hachiko Line, and the Shigano Higashi Industrial Park and other areas have been developed, with factories for electrical appliances, food, and other products moving in.
