The Campbell sunshine meter, which has been used since ancient times, is an instrument that uses a glass bulb to create a focal point for sunlight, which leaves a burnt mark on a recording paper, and measures the hours of sunshine from the length of the burnt mark. The Jordan sunshine meter uses a piece of photosensitive paper placed inside a sealed cylinder, and determines the hours of sunshine from the light trail left by sunlight entering through two small holes in the cylinder.
