Kos (island)

Japanese: コス[島]（英語表記）Kos

An island in the Dodecanese archipelago of Greece. It is long and narrow, stretching 43 km from east to west and 1.8 to 10 km from north to south, with an area of 290 km2 and a population of 16,650 (1971). A fertile plain stretches along the north coast, about 4 km wide, and the south coast is a steep mountain range. In ancient times, it was an island of Dorian inhabitants, said to have been colonized by the Epidaurus people. At the beginning of the 5th century BC, Cadmus voluntarily abandoned the tyrannical government he had inherited from his father Scythes, and it is possible that he was a member of the Delian League from the beginning. Around 412 BC, the city of Kos was hit by an earthquake, and at the same time it separated from Athens.

ギリシア領ドデカネス諸島の島。東西約43km，南北の幅1.8～10kmと細長く，面積290km2，人口1万6650(1971)。北岸沿いに幅約4kmの肥沃な平野が帯状に走り，南岸は急峻な山地。古代にはエピダウロス人の植民が伝えられるドリス系住民の島であった。前5世紀初め，カドモスが父スキュテスから継承した僭主政権を自発的に放棄し，デロス同盟には当初から加盟した可能性がある。前412年ころコス市は震災に見舞われ，同時にアテナイから離反した。
