An island in the Dodecanese archipelago of Greece. It is long and narrow, stretching 43 km from east to west and 1.8 to 10 km from north to south, with an area of 290 km2 and a population of 16,650 (1971). A fertile plain stretches along the north coast, about 4 km wide, and the south coast is a steep mountain range. In ancient times, it was an island of Dorian inhabitants, said to have been colonized by the Epidaurus people. At the beginning of the 5th century BC, Cadmus voluntarily abandoned the tyrannical government he had inherited from his father Scythes, and it is possible that he was a member of the Delian League from the beginning. Around 412 BC, the city of Kos was hit by an earthquake, and at the same time it separated from Athens. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
