A former town in Nishi-Kunisaki District, in the northwest of the Kunisaki Peninsula, Oita Prefecture. It occupies the Matama River and Usuno River basins, with rice paddies in the lowlands along the rivers and farmland on the gentle slopes of the mountains and coastal terraces. It produces rice, white onions, and shiitake mushrooms. It also produces horticulture in greenhouses, growing melons, strawberries, and persimmons. Aquaculture is also practiced.
