[Avant-garde and French animation]
In France, after E. Cole established the genre of cartoon film, the avant-garde movement of the 1920s produced experimental animation such as the painter F. Léger's Ballet Mécanique (1925). During the same period, German painters such as Oskar Fischinger, Walter Ruttmann, Hans Richter, and Julius Pinscheuer, and Swedish painter Bigging Egeling produced abstract art (abstract film), for example, in which music and shapes were synchronized. This was the source of the trend that continued with such subsequent works as the world's first shadow puppet animation, The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) by Germany's Lotte Reiniger, France's pin-screen Night on Bald Mountain (1933), and Hector Oppin and Anthony Grosz's experimental Joy of Living (1936).In contrast to America, which developed animation as cartoons = mass entertainment, the European tendency to accept it as a purely artistic technique of expression is already clearly visible from this point on. Subsequent French films include Paul Grimaud's fairy-tale-like cartoon film The Tyrant (1953), which satirizes dictators, and its complete version, The King and the Bird (1979); the cruel animation The Play of Mr and Mrs Cabal (1967), by the Polish-born Walerian Borowczyk, which sometimes uses intense reds in simple black-and-white drawings; and René Laloux's science fiction animation Fantastic Planet (1973), which uses paper cutting to animate Roland Topor's original drawings.

　フランスでは，漫画映画のジャンルを確立したE.コールのあと，1920年代にアバンギャルド運動とともに，画家のF.レジェによる実験アニメ《バレエ･メカニック》(1925)などが生まれ，同じ時期にドイツのオスカー･フィッシンガー，ワルター･ルットマン，ハンス･リヒター，ユリウス･ピンシェウワー，スウェーデンのビギング･エゲリングといった画家たちが，例えば音楽と図形がシンクロナイズするようなアブストラクト･アート(抽象映画)を発表した。これは，以降のドイツのロッテ･ライニガーの世界最初の影絵アニメ《アクメッド王子の冒険》(1926)，フランスのアレクサンドル･アレクセイエフの〈ピン･スクリーン〉《禿山の一夜》(1933)，エクトル･オッパンとアントニー･グロスの実験的な《生きる歓び》(1936)などへと続く流れの源流で，アニメーションを漫画＝大衆娯楽として発達させたアメリカとは対照的に，あくまでも純粋な美術的表現技術として受け止めたヨーロッパ的傾向が，このあたりからすでに際だって見られる。　その後もフランスでは，ポール･グリモーの独裁者を風刺した童話的な漫画映画《やぶにらみの暴君》(1953)およびその完全版として手直しされた《王様と鳥》(1979)や，ポーランド生れのワレリアン･ボロフチクの，単純なモノクロのデッサンの中に，時として強烈な赤を用いたりする残酷アニメ《カバール夫妻の芝居》(1967)，ロラン･トポールの原画を〈切紙〉で動かしたルネ･ラルーのSFアニメ《ファンタスティック･プラネット》(1973。…
