Culpeo - Kurupeo (English spelling)

Japanese: クルペオ - くるぺお（英語表記）culpeo

A mammal of the carnivora family Canidae, similar to a small coyote but with a larger tail. It lives in the scrub forests, wastelands, and semi-deserts of the mountainous areas of Tierra del Fuego, from Ecuador and Peru along the Andes to the southern tip of South America. It has a body length of 52-120 cm, a tail length of 36-50 cm, and a weight of 4-13 kg. It is intermediate between the Canis and Vulpes genera, and is also called the culpeo fox because of its thick, long tail like that of a fox. However, in South America it is the second largest species after the maned wolf, and is much larger than a fox and has a different body shape, with a long snout and large ears, resembling a coyote or jackal.

小型のコヨーテに似ているが尾がさらに大きい食肉目イヌ科の哺乳類。エクアドル，ペルーからアンデス山脈に沿い南アメリカの南端までと，フエゴ島の山地の低木林，荒れ地，半砂漠などにすむ。体長52～120cm，尾長36～50cm，体重4～13kg。イヌ属とキツネ属の中間のもので，尾がキツネに似て太く長いためクルペオキツネculpeo foxとも呼ばれる。しかし，南アメリカではタテガミオオカミに次ぐ大型種で，キツネよりはるかに大きく体型も異なり，吻（ふん）が長く耳介が大きく，コヨーテやジャッカルに似る。
