American photographic engineer. Graduated from Rochester Public School and worked for insurance companies and banks. Since the founding of photography by Niépce and Daguerre, photosensitive plates were heavy and inconvenient to handle, made of slate, glass, or metal plates. In 1880, Eastman began manufacturing photographic dry plates, and in 1884, he created the modern-day film made by coating nitrocellulose film with gelatin silver bromide emulsion. He also bought the patent for the daytime loading cassette for roll film invented by Turner Samuel N. Turner, and launched The Kodak, which became popular among amateur photographers. With the advertising slogan "You just press the shutter, we'll do the rest," Eastman Kodak soared into the world (later, due to its delayed response to digitalization, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2012). He is a famous philanthropist, donating much of his fortune to universities and hospitals. After achieving brilliant success, Eastman committed heroic suicide upon learning that he was suffering from an incurable disease.
