He was a member of a famous family of actors, and all of his parents and siblings were actors, but he was especially famous for his sister, Mrs. Siddons (1755-1831), who was considered the greatest tragic actress of the late 18th and 19th centuries, and his niece, Fanny Kemble (1809-93), who showed talent in both tragedies and comedies in Shakespeare's plays in the 19th century. John Philip Kemble had been performing on stage with his parents since he was a child, and in 1783 he made his London debut as Hamlet, and won acclaim for roles as important Shakespearean tragedies, including Brutus in Julius Caesar and the hero of Coriolanus. …
