A folktale with the theme of karma and retribution for one's sins. A man finds a singing skull and makes money from it. However, the skull does not sing when the lord requests it, and instead the man, whose past crimes are exposed on the spot, is executed. The story goes that the skull was the man's friend, who was killed by the man after stealing his money. This story is told in limited areas such as Kyushu, Hokuetsu, Tohoku, and Chugoku regions. However, it has been collected in relatively large numbers from the Nansei Islands and Niigata. Similar stories can be found in the Nihon Ryōiki and Konjaku Monogatarishu.
