Mountain railway - Tozan Tetsudo (English name)

A railway line built in scenic mountain areas primarily for the purpose of transporting tourists. It is not an academic or technical term, but is commonly used. In Japan, the only mountain railway with the name "mountain railway" is the Hakone Tozan Railway (15.0 km between Odawara and Gora). In Europe, there are many mountain railways in the Alps, including in Switzerland, Austria, France, and Italy. Other world-famous railways include the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India.

The Hakone Tozan Railway has a maximum gradient of 80‰ (per mille, 80‰ is a gradient of 80 meters in height per 1000 meters of horizontal distance), which is almost the limit for a railway that uses adhesion operation (propulsion using friction between the rails and wheels). For gradients steeper than this, a rack rail system is used, in which toothed rails are laid and the gears on the cars mesh to prevent slipping while ascending and descending the slope. Rack rail systems include Abt, Riggenbach, and Locher. In Japan, the Abt system is used on the Oigawa Railway Ikawa Line between Abt Ichishiro and Nagashima Dam. The steepest gradient recorded for a toothed rail railway is about 500‰, set by the Pilatus Mountain Railway in Switzerland. To climb gradients steeper than this, a cable car or ropeway system is used.

Most of the vehicles are powered by electric trains, but the Brienz Rothornbahn in Switzerland and the Achenseebahn in Austria still use steam locomotives. The Mount Manitou Cog Railway, which starts in Colorado Springs in the United States, is a cog-rail system with diesel rail cars. For railways that climb steep slopes for the most part, the locomotives and passenger cars are built in an inclined staircase to match the slope. A characteristic of mountain railways is that, due to the difficulty of climbing steep slopes directly, they overcome the terrain by using switchbacks and loops to reach the destination summit or scenic tourist spot from the foot of the mountain. The Yokokawa-Karuizawa section (closed in 1997) over Usui Pass on the Shinetsu Main Line and the main railways over the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada are called mountain lines, but are not generally called mountain railways. Nankai Electric Railway's Koya Line also has a steep gradient of 50‰ near the entrance to Mount Koya, but it is not called a mountain railway.

主として観光客を輸送する目的で山岳の景勝地に敷設された鉄道。学術的または専門的な用語ではないが、一般的に使われている。日本で登山鉄道として社名に冠しているのは箱根登山鉄道（小田原―強羅(ごうら)間15.0キロメートル）のみである。ヨーロッパではスイス、オーストリア、フランス、イタリアなどアルプス山系に数多くの登山鉄道がある。またアメリカのコロラド州のロッキー山系、インドのダージリン・ヒマラヤ鉄道も世界的に有名である。

　箱根登山鉄道は最急勾配(こうばい)が80‰（パーミル、千分率。80‰は水平距離1000メートルに対し高さ80メートルの勾配）で、粘着運転（レールと車輪の摩擦で推進する運転）を行う鉄道としてはほとんど限度に近い急坂区間を有する。これ以上の急勾配になると、歯形軌条を敷設して、車両に装備した歯車がかみ合って空転防止をしながら登坂・降下をするラックレール式鉄道を採用する。ラックレールの方式としてアプト、リッゲンバッハおよびロヒャーなどがある。日本では大井川鉄道井川線のアプトいちしろ―長島ダム間がアプト式を採用している。歯形軌条による鉄道の最急勾配記録はスイスのピラトゥス登山鉄道で約500‰である。これ以上の急勾配を登坂する場合にはケーブルカーやロープウェー方式となる。

　車両の動力方式はほとんどが電車であるが、スイスのブリエンツ・ロートホルン鉄道、オーストリアのアッヘンゼー鉄道などはいまなお蒸気機関車を使用している。アメリカのコロラド・スプリングズを起点とするマニトウ山登山鉄道はディーゼル動車による歯形軌条式である。全区間のほとんどが急斜面を登ることに終始する鉄道では機関車・客車が斜面にあわせて傾斜階段状につくられる。登山鉄道の特徴としては、直接急斜面を登ることのむずかしさからスイッチバックやループ線にして地形を克服しながら山麓(さんろく)から目的地の山頂あるいは観光景勝地点に到達する。信越本線の碓氷峠(うすいとうげ)越えの横川―軽井沢間（1997年廃止）やアメリカ、カナダのロッキー山脈越えの幹線鉄道については山岳線とはよぶが、一般的には登山鉄道とはよばない。南海電気鉄道の高野(こうや)線も50‰の急勾配が高野山口付近にあるが、登山鉄道とはよばない。
