Barnack, O.

In 1912, Eastman Kodak Company (abbreviated as Kodak) released the Vest Pocket Kodak (in Japan, the ones with a single lens were affectionately known as "Vest Pocket Kodak"). This was the first mass-produced camera and became a worldwide best-seller. Meanwhile, with the spread of movies, there were many plans to convert 35mm movie film into a still camera. Oskar Barnack (1879-1936), an engineer at the German microscope manufacturer Leitz, began making prototypes in 1813, and in 1925 released the Leica A. This camera had a screen size of two movie frames (36mm x 24mm), known as double size, and was the forerunner of today's compact still cameras. It also had the basic requirements of a modern compact camera, using film in a magazine and a self-cocking system in which the focal plane shutter was wound at the same time as the film was advanced one frame. In 1929, the German company Franke & Heidecke released a modernized twin-lens reflex camera that used roll film, laying the foundation for the new medium-format camera.
