Masakoto Kimura

A scholar of Japanese classics and Japanese language. His pen name was Hanimaro. His pen names included Tsukinoya, Shukoyado, Sanjusouan, Enjuya, and Jikoku. He was born in Narita, Shimousa Province (Chiba Prefecture), and first studied Japanese classics, poetry, and classical Chinese. He later studied Japanese and Chinese classics and rhyming under Okamoto Yasutaka (1797-1878). In 1863 (Bunkyu 3), he became assistant head of the Shogunate's New Association of Japanese Studies, and later served as professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University (now the Faculty of Letters of the University of Tokyo) and at the Higher Normal School (now the University of Tsukuba). In 1902 (Meiji 35), he became a member of the Ministry of Education's National Language Research Committee. He made outstanding achievements in his research into the Man'yoshu, including strict textual criticism and detailed study of the readings and interpretations. His works include "Manyoshu Mifugushi" and "Manyoshu Bibliography."

国学者、国語学者。字(あざな)は埴満(はにまろ)。号は欟斎(つきのや)、集古葉堂、三十二艸庵(そうあん)、円珠屋、爾谷(じこく)など。下総(しもうさ)国（千葉県）成田に生まれ、初め国学、詠歌、漢学を学び、のち岡本保孝(おかもとやすたか)（1797―1878）について和漢学、韻学を修めた。1863年（文久3）幕府和学新会頭助役、のち帝国大学文科大学（現、東京大学文学部）教授、高等師範学校（現、筑波(つくば)大学）教授などを歴任、1902年（明治35）文部省国語調査委員会委員となった。『万葉集』研究において厳密な本文批判、訓釈の考究など優れた業績を残した。『万葉集美夫君志(みふぐし)』『万葉集書目』などがある。
