Shinsai Igarashi

Japanese: 五十嵐信斎 - いがらし・しんさい

Years of birth: unknown. A lacquer artist from the late Muromachi period, and the founder of the Igarashi school. He served Ashikaga Yoshimasa together with Ko'ami Michinaga, and was known as a master craftsman. His works were later called "Higashiyama Imperial Treasures" and highly valued, but no historical documents or works relating to Shinsai are known. According to the Kyoto Honpoji Kyogyoin Past Records, there are several families among his descendants, including the Doho line who served the Kaga Maeda family, and the Taibei line who are thought to have been involved in the lacquer work of Hon'ami Koetsu, but as there are no entries in the past records prior to the Keicho period (1596-1615), the interrelationships of the families are unclear.

室町後期の蒔絵師で,五十嵐派の始祖。幸阿弥道長と共に足利義政に仕え,名工としてその名が聞こえ,その作品はのちに「東山御物」と称され珍重されたが,信斎に関する史料並びに作品は未詳である。「京都本法寺教行院過去帳」によれば,子孫には加賀前田家に仕えた道甫系,本阿弥光悦の蒔絵制作に関与したと目される太兵衛系など数種の家系が存在するが,同過去帳には慶長(1596～1615)以前の記載がないため,家系の相互関係は不明である。
