Hatoma Island

Japanese: 鳩間島 - はとまじま

An island located about 4km north of Iriomote Island in the Yaeyama Islands in western Okinawa Prefecture. It belongs to Taketomi Town. The island is made of limestone and is surrounded entirely by coral limestone. The surrounding area is a fishing ground for bonito, squid, etc. It was an old settlement that was half farming, half fishing, but has switched to tourism. Folk songs such as Hatoma Bushi are known. Regular ferries run from Ishigaki Island. The entire island belongs to Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. The sea area between the island and Iriomote Island is designated as the Hatoma Island Barasu Marine Park District. Area: 0.96 ^km2 . Population: 54 (2000).

沖縄県西部，八重山諸島の西表島北方約 4kmにある島。竹富町に属する。島は石灰岩からなり，周囲はすべてサンゴ石灰岩に囲まれる。付近はカツオ，イカなどの漁場。半農半漁の古い集落であったが，観光に転換。鳩間節などの民謡が知られる。石垣島から定期船が就航。全島が西表石垣国立公園に属する。西表島との間の海域が鳩間島バラス海域公園地区に指定されている。面積 0.96km²。人口 54（2000）。
