Gosannen Kassen Emaki - Gosannen Kassen Emaki
A picture scroll depicting the Gosannen War (1083-87). Created in 1347 (the third year of the Jōwa period). Colored on paper, three volumes, plus one preface volume. Owned by the Tokyo National Museum. The text was drafted by Gen'e, a monk from Mount Hiei, the illustrations were by Hida no Kami Kose Korehisa, and the legends were written by Nakanao, Jimyōin Hoshu, and Sesonji Gyokutada, each of whom contributed to copying one volume. Originally there were six volumes, but the first three have been lost. It is notable for its detailed depictions. The Gosannen Kassen Emaki (1171), painted by Myōjitsu under the imperial decree of Emperor Goshirakawa, is said to be the beginning of battle picture scrolls, but no longer exists.
