Owatatsumi-no-kami - Owatatsumi-no-kami

Japanese:
Owatatsumi-no-kami - Owatatsumi-no-kami
The name of a god that appears in Japanese mythology. Wata means sea, and Watatsumi means spirit of the sea. The origin of the word wata is unclear, but it seems to mean the sea as the home of spiritual things, whereas umi and unabara evoke the sea as a natural entity. There are several shrines that worship Watatsumi-no-kami, but Owatatsumi-no-kami in particular refers to a god who appears in the stories of Umisachi and Yamasachi in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki as a deity who lives in an underwater palace and rules over seafood and the waters for agriculture. When Yamasachihiko (son of Ninigi-no-Mikoto) lost the fishing hook he had borrowed from his brother Umisachihiko, he visited Watatsumi-no-miya in search of the hook.
