A state in New England, USA. Abbreviated as Mass. or MA. The eastern part of the state is a coastal plain facing the Atlantic Ocean, with Cape Cod standing out, while the western part is hilly, an extension of the Appalachian Mountains. The Connecticut River valley runs north and south through the hills. Industries such as leather products, clothing, and precision machinery are thriving, centering around Boston. Dairy farming and suburban agriculture are also well developed, and apples, cranberries, tobacco, and potatoes are produced in large quantities. It is the second oldest state in the state after Virginia, and has been the anchor of the American northern spirit since the founding of the Plymouth Colony by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620.
