Japanese: 気管切開術 - きかんせっかいじゅつ（英語表記）tracheotomy

This is a surgical procedure in which the trachea is cut in the neck to create a bypass in the airway. There are upper and lower tracheotomy. The former is mainly performed on adults, and the latter on children. In addition to emergency measures for severe respiratory distress, it is often performed following endotracheal intubation when secretions from the lower respiratory tract or lungs are difficult to cough up, or when consciousness is impaired for a long period of time. It may also be performed as a preliminary procedure for major surgery on the pharynx, larynx, or nasal cavity.

気管を頸部で切開して気道にバイパスをつくる手術。上気管切開と下気管切開とがある。前者はおもに成人，後者は小児に実施されることが多い。重篤な呼吸困難の際の救急対策のほか，下気道や肺からの分泌物が喀出されにくいとき，意識障害が長く続いているときなどに気管内挿管に続いて行われることが多い。また，咽頭，喉頭，鼻腔の大手術に際して，予備的に行われる場合もある。
