...The ancestors of the Sotho people are said to be Nguni-speaking people who crossed the Drakensberg Mountains and migrated south in the 18th century. In the early 19th century, when King Shaka of the Zulus attacked them, King Moshoeshoe I (c. 1785-1870) fled with his family to Thaba Bosiu (a flat-topped hill near Maseru), where he used skillful diplomatic tactics to avoid invasions by the Zulus and Matabele.
