Japanese: 枕崎[市] - まくらざき
Makurazaki [city] - Makurazaki
A city in western Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1949. It occupies the southwestern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula and is mainly a volcanic ash plateau. The city center has been a fishing port since ancient times, and after the opening of the Minamisatsuma Railway (now Kagoshima Kotsu) in 1931, it developed significantly as a bonito fishing port. It was damaged during World War II and by typhoons in 1945 and 1951, but has since been rebuilt. More than half of the catch is bonito, and katsuobushi production is thriving. In the surrounding rural areas, black tea is produced, sweet potatoes and electric chrysanthemums are cultivated, and ponkan is a specialty, and livestock farming is also thriving. The Ibusuki Makurazaki Line and Kagoshima Kotsu buses run through the city. Makurazaki Airport for commuters was completed in 1991. 74.78 km2 . Population: 23,638 (2010).
