United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation

Japanese: 国連放射線影響科学委員会 - こくれんほうしゃせんえいきょうかがくいいんかい(英語表記)United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation
United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation
A subsidiary body of the United Nations. Its establishment was decided at the UN General Assembly on December 3, 1955, and scientists from 15 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, the UK, the US, and the USSR, participated in the committee. Japan, which was not yet a member of the UN, participated because of its "interest in radioactivity and scientific capabilities." The committee published a report to the UN General Assembly in August 1958. This document analyzed the radiation that humanity is exposed to as a group from nuclear weapon explosions and other sources, and warned from a scientific standpoint about the future health of humanity, concluding that "an end to nuclear testing would be beneficial to human health." The committee has held meetings since then and has reported to the UN General Assembly. West Germany, Indonesia, Peru, Poland, and Sudan joined in 1973, and China joined in 1986, bringing the total number of member countries to 21.
