British Sanskrit scholar. He studied at the universities of Göttingen and Leipzig, and served as professor at Oxford University from 1899 to 1927. His philological studies of the Vedas are known for their steady and accurate style, and many of his works have become essential reading for future students. His works include an edited version of the Catalogue of the Katyayana, a catalogue of the contents of the Rig-Veda (1886), an edited and translated version of the Brihad-Devata, a catalogue of deities in the Rig-Veda (1904), and a descriptive grammar, Vedic Grammar (1910), which systematically classifies and covers all the mantras in the four Vedic texts.

イギリスのサンスクリット学者。ゲッティンゲン，ライプチヒ両大学で学び，1899‐1927年オックスフォード大学の教授を務める。ベーダの文献学的研究は着実･正確の学風で知られ，業績の多くは後学の必携の書となっている。《リグ･ベーダ》の内容目録である《カーティヤーヤナ総目録》の校訂(1886)，同じ《リグ･ベーダ》の神格目録である《ブリハッド･デーバター》の校訂，翻訳(1904)，また4ベーダ本集のマントラの単語を網羅し，組織的に分類した記述文法である《ベーダ文法》(1910)などがある。
