Holy Roman Emperor (1493-1519, coronated in 1508). Born in the House of Habsburg. Son of Frederick III. In 1477, he inherited the Netherlands through his marriage to a Duchess of Burgundy, but became embroiled in a conflict with France. After 1495, he implemented a series of plans to reform the empire, including the issuance of the Edict of Perpetual Peace and the establishment of an Imperial Court, but these failed due to opposition from conservative princes and cities. There were also many events in foreign affairs, such as the Italian War with France over Milan and Naples, a feud with Turkey due to his acquisition of the right of succession to Bohemia and Hungary, and the recognition of Swiss independence. He was popular among the people of his time, especially humanists, and was called "the last knight."
