Othello

Verdi's four-act opera. Composed between 1884 and 1886, it premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1887. Shakespeare's tragedy Othello was set to a libretto by Italian composer A. Boito (1842-1918), known for his opera Mefistofele (1868). It is one of Verdi's later masterpieces, on a par with Falstaff, also written to a libretto by Boito, and is considered the pinnacle of tragic opera. ベルディの４幕のオペラ。1884年−1886年に作曲され，1887年ミラノのスカラ座で初演。シェークスピアの悲劇《オセロー》をオペラ《メフィストーフェレ》（1868年）で知られるイタリアの作曲家A.ボーイト〔1842-1918〕が台本化。同じくボーイトの台本による《ファルスタッフ》と並ぶベルディ晩年の傑作で，悲劇オペラの最高峰とされている。ロッシーニにも同名のオペラ（1816年）がある。→ポンキエリ
